As a writer on the afterlives and legacies of socialist state architecture, I figured that I could take a holiday from my work in Odessa. I was attracted to the city by the maritime location, the high-quality language instruction – and crucially – by the relative absence of notable socialist-era architecture in the core part of the city center.
